An Algebra for Theoretical Genetics - Vannevar Bush suggested that Claude Elwood Shannon work on his dissertation at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, funded by the Carnegie Institution headed by Bush, to develop similar mathematical relationships for Mendelian genetics, which resulted in Shannon's 1940 PhD thesis at MIT, An Algebra for Theoretical Genetics. Shannon then joined Bell Labs to work on fire-control systems and cryptography during World War II.
Knut Tarald Taraldsen - Knut Tarald Taraldsen is a Norwegian linguist working in Tromsø, Norway as a senior researcher at the Center for Advanced Study in Theoretical Linguistics (CASTL). His work mostly concerns syntactic theory and he did early, groundbreaking work on parasitic gaps (roughly at the same time as Elisabeth Engdahl) and is also responsible for Taraldsen's generalization concerning the cross-linguistic correlation between null subjects and subject-verb agreement.
